First Blog

My name is Patrice and I am a mother of three children-one of which has the diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome. Just for reference, I was born and raised in a small town in Florida, married a guy in the military and have lived in many places(Missouri, NC, HI, GA, VA, FL, KS,and TX). I worked as a teacher for many years with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a Masters in Gifted Ed. I passed the board certification in 2011 as a behavior analyst (BCBA). Our story is typical of many others with problems in schools, identification, medication, therapies, sibling issues,  etc. I understand the role of the teacher, the therapist and the mom of a child on the spectrum. Stress was a major theme in my life and I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer two years ago and successfully completed chemo, surgery and radiation. Currently, I enjoy my life with friends here in Texas and working out at my oldest son’s CrossFit gym. Our daughter is a freshman at UT and our youngest Aspie is successfully attending a public high school, playing football and is totally mainstreamed.

As a therapist, I found that moms take a heavy hit on the responsibility and stress part of raising a child on the spectrum. This blog is an attempt to help. I can share what I have learned but more importantly are the things I wish to learn and shifting who I want to be. I hope to learn from the past and move on -but not too far into the unseen future to get lost. Enjoying the moment is the theme I wish to promote.  Although it sounds very simple, getting to that place is not easy. Staying there is even more difficult to “enjoy what is”. I meditate, study A Course In Miracles and listen to my horses, dogs, and dreams for guidance. It is a spiritual thing!

So, here is my plan:

  1. I will write from a place of peace.
  2. I will offer whatever comes up with the hope that it can help others as well.
  3. We may create a positive community.
  4. Our playing together can be beneficial and I hope to offer some inspired actions.
